He Could Have Sold Them a $7,000 Repair. He Told Them They Didn't Need It.

He Could Have Sold Them a $7,000 Repair. He Told Them They Didn't Need It.

The Canyon approach is NOT finding the most expensive repair a customer might accept. The goal is to find the real problem, make a reliable repair, and restore operation as quickly as possible.

He Could Have Sold Them a $7,000 Repair. He Told Them They Didn’t Need It.

Salt Lake Community College called Jason from Canyon Overhead Doors about an inoperable 14’ x 12’ rolling steel door at the South City Campus.

A new school semester was approaching and the Arts Department would soon need access to equipment and props behind that door.

Josh, manager of the carpentry department, explained that another commercial garage door company had already inspected the door. Their diagnosis was a broken spring. They gave a repair estimate of $7,000 and a three to five week wait for parts.

Jason arrived Wednesday morning to assess the problem. He spent about five minutes inspecting the door, then told Josh the springs were not broken, they just needed adjustment.

He said he could return the next morning and fix it.

Jason knew about the $7,000 estimate.

He knew about the three to five week wait.

He also knew his company manufactures springs in-house so he could have easily quoted a replacement for 30% less, completed the job sooner, and still looked like a hero.

But the door didn’t need new springs.

He turned down a $7,000 job because the customer didn’t need it.

The next morning, Jason returned with one of his technicians and a scissor lift. They moved the curtain back into the correct position, secured it in the guides, adjusted the springs, then completed a system calibration to ensure correct operation and safety.

By 10 a.m. the door was working like new.

Not five weeks, 10 a.m. the next morning.

Not a $7,000 spring replacement, an accurate diagnosis and a repair the door actually needed.

The Canyon approach is NOT finding the most expensive repair a customer might accept. The goal is to find the real problem, make a reliable repair, and restore operation as quickly as possible.

That approach may produce a smaller invoice today. But it also produces something more valuable: TRUST.

Jason would rather become the person a facility manager calls for the next ten years than maximize margin on one repair.

That is a business strategy.

It is also simply who he is.

At Canyon Overhead Doors, those two things are meant to be the same.
